The Telegraph has published an article detailing MPs plans to push for a new law that requires bosses to send staff home if workplace temperatures rise above 30 degrees. As England swelters today, it may encourage some employers to embrace a remote working policy so staff can remain productive in the comfort of their homes.
Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations put into practice in 1992 outline a lower temperature limit of 16 degrees but there is currently no upper limit. Labour MP Linda Riordan and seventeen other MPs have signed an early-day motion, citing some of the issu
es related to extreme workplace temperatures. These can include: dizziness and feeling faint, irritability, discomfort, stress and a loss of attention to detail.
According to the Telegraph, the Trade Union Congress (TUC) supports cutting short work days when temperatures reach 30-32 degrees, however this can present an issue for businesses in that the loss of hours may seriously impede things financially.
