Often referred to a VaaS (Video as a Service) or even VCaaS (Video Conferencing as a Service), Video as a Service is a buzzword in the video conferencing industry, but what exactly is it?
Defined on Wikipedia as: The delivery of multiparty or point-to-point video conferencing capabilities over an IP network by a managed service provider.
Andrew W. Davis, Senior Analyst at Wainhouse Research (a leading independent market research firm that focuses on critical issues in the unified communicationsand collaboration (UC&C) market) defines it as: A hosted service that provides a customer with all the infrastructure needed to make calls; either point to point or multipoint.
They are similar enough, but there appears to be other people using definitions that include phrases such as:
A hosted VMR (Virtual Meeting Room) on the internet or a hosted web link (pin codes don’t equate to security); or even a software application on a desktop computer.
Getting confused yet?
Personally, we think all of the above define VaaS one or two years ago. VaaS has moved on. Customers have demanded it moves on. We don’t think that any of the above really sum up what video as a service should and can offer a business today.
What every business is entitled to when thinking about using VaaS, and what we define it as is:
Video conferencing that can be accessed and consumed as and when; it’s on demand. It should be high quality in both audio and video, secure, scalable and hosted in a public, private or hybrid cloud (dependant on the business needs). VaaS should deliver enterprise experience and functionality to everyone.
